The Roman Theatre of Aosta was built a few decades after the foundation of the city, which took place in 25 BC.
It dates back to the time of Emperor Claudius and was part of an area dedicated to entertainment, with the theatre and amphitheatre built near Porta Pretoria, in the north-eastern area of Aosta.
The theatre extends over an area measuring 81 metres in width and 64 metres in length. The external façade rises 22 metres on the southern side and was characterised by vertical buttresses placed 5.5 metres apart from one another.
The seating area could accommodate 3,500/4,000 people, while the orchestra had a radius of 10 metres.
During the 20th century, the Roman Theatre underwent numerous restoration and preservation works.
Some of these brought to light the remains of houses dating back to the 2nd or 3rd century AD.
Today, the theatre hosts concerts and performances during the summer season.
In winter, it becomes the charming setting for the Christmas Markets.
